The roots of Theatre Institute go back to year 1913 when Catalonian School of Dramatic Art was founded in Barcelona. Today the Institute teaches in stage arts. It consists of various schools and centres: Higher School of Dramatic Art with the following departments: directing, dramaturgy, acting (specialties: dramatic actor, movement theatre actor, puppet theatre and object theatre actor, musical actor), Higher Conservatory of Dance, Artistic Higschool - Dance School, as well as theatres, documentation centres, audiovisual rooms, Museum of Stage Arts. The Institute organizes festivals and congresses. It also has its centres outside Barcelona: there is a School of Stage Techniques in Terrassa and a professional acting school in Vic.
The headquarters of the Theatre Institute in Barcelona are located in the theatre town where there are also Mercat de les Flors and Teatre Lliure theatres.
The puppet school in the Theatre Institute was established in 1975. Until 1992 puppetry classes did not have any fixed organizational frames. At that time a separate marionette course was run by Harry V. Tozer. Members of the majority of present professional puppet companies in Catalonia are graduates of the school. The structural reform from 1992 that initiated the Theatre Institute integrated puppetry studies with dramaturgy studies. This reduced the number of students and resulted in creation of a new department that was closer to the movement theatre and more open to foreign students.

STREETS
José Maria Fonollosa |
Director: Vicent Ortola
Cast: Jordi Magnieto Martinez, Juanma Palacios, Laura Piqué Saboya, Roger Sala Reyner
Duration: 35 min
Barcelona, Hawana and New York were the three key places in the life and art of José Maria Fonollosa, a forgotten anonymous poet. For over 40 Fonollosa devoted himself to writing poems inspired by night and the dark part of the life of big cities where - according to him - "all one does is to drag his unburied corpse". Fonollosa was one of them. He did not live to see any of his works published. Even after his death his poetry did not see the daylight.
José Maria Fonollosa died on 7 October 1991. On his desk, next to his will, there was a scrap book with the following poem:
No a la transmigración en otra especie.
No a la post vida, ni en cielo ni en infierno.
No a que me absorba cualquier divinidad.
No a un allá, ni aun siendo el paraíso
reservado a islamitas, con beldades
Que un libro garantiza siempre vírgenes.
Porque esos juegos son juegos para ingenuos
en que mi agnosticismo nunca apuesta.
Mi envite es al no ser. A lo seguro.
Rechazo otro existir, tras consumida
mi ración de este guiso indigerible.
Otra vez, no. Una vez es demasiado.
